It seems like everyone has a hand out for a handout these days. From the little boys in baseball uniforms shaking cans of coins at you as you exit the supermarket, to the classy fund-raising letter you get from your local hospital—everyone needs money. Not surprising; with the economy just barel...

I wonder, PJ if huge organisations like MD Anderson find it easier to get grants? Like you, I tend to have a soft spot for the little guys. Often their thinking is more original and it from this that many great discoveries come.

Can we sponsor you in your walk?

Sue, I'd bet the big organizations have figured out how to get large funding to support their large efforts... don't mean that to sound negative, I KNOW they do good work, but I still think the cure will be born in some quirky little back lab, then refined and rolled out by "the big guys." I"m fortunate that I live right here in the same town with this wonderful research facility, and I know people who work there. They say they're SO close to figuring out so manyt hings about cancer... but suffered from Bush's 80% funding cuts. And of course I'd love it if you'd support me - that's very generous. Wacky URL, I know; I tell them they need a new Web host! Cheers - Back to school soon, eh? PJ

i am a breast cancersurvivor , a doctor by profession currently studying for a postgraduate degree in human pathology.i would really like to do a dissertation on breast cancer that would add new knowledge to what is already known and take us closer to a cure.due to financial constraints i might have to settle for a cheap study that does not add much value. financial help or suggestions as to where i can access such help will be highly appreciated.

Sorry, I'm simply a breast cancer survivor, not part of the medical or research community - I might not be the best person to ask. I'd think you'd want to start by asking members of that research community the best way to get funding? Or contact the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which is a HUGE fund-raiser for research. Or the Stand Up to Cancer organization, which is funding new types of research in imaginative ways. Good luck - PJH
