AI percentage of benefit

By Esther Kowalski Thursday, July 12, 2007
Today I went for my three month check up with the oncologist.  I asked him what percentage of benefit does the Aromatase Inhibitors give.  he said it was 67 percent.  He said that if it were only a small percentage, he wouldn't push people to take them.  I hope he is telling the truth.  Anyway, I am now taking the Femara and so far I am doing allright.  I guess I have to really concentrate more on accepting some side effects.  As long as they aren't as bad as the ones from the Arimidex, I guess I can stand it.

Thank you for your SharePost. Weighing the benefits vs. the side effects of nearly every prescription medication is part of almost all of our lives, and can be much more so for those who take side effect-heavy drugs such as Femara. The information you've shared is important. Much appreciated. Best to you... M

After posting the note on what the oncologist told me about the Femara, I read someone elses share post that her doctor told her 10% so I guess we are back to square one as to what benefit we get.  It sure would be nice to know who to believe.  The doctor I have has come very highly reccommended but then again I find that most doctors seem to over state percentages when it comes to the drugs used.

Each patient will have a different benefit percentage to different hormone therapies. There are different hormones that can be positive or negative (some can even be triple of either) and therefore the percent will change case by case. I work at a major cancer center in the breast clinic and it can be extremely hard to understand sometimes. There is also a great website that helps answer many questions about all types of drugs and side effects. I find it very useful: chemocare.com.

Hope this helps and best of luck!
