Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Our first BIG cancer fight!!!

By WillFightIt Friday, April 09, 2010

Its been 6 months since my cancer diagnosis and yesterday me and my husband had our
first BIG cancer fight; a fight related to my cancer and its side effects. Here is what
I think is an impartial view; I had been taking letrozole (Femara) and zoladex (goserelin)
as a part of a clinical trial, and since I am pre menopausal, this sudden medical menopause
causes horrendous hot flashes. It was okay during winter, when ever I felt warm, I just went and
slept on our couch, right next to big glass window which would transmit frigid air right over to the couch,
lulling me to sleep almost immediately. However now that spring is here that no longer works, so I started keeping out thermostat
at unGodly frigid temperatures. That was okay with my hubby until he caught a cold. So yesterday was a turf war
on temperature control, leaving us both sleepless and blearly eyed.

I could clearly see 2 Gouris (that's my name) howering around my head, one in pure white and a halo, and another
dressed in red leather with horns and a tail.

Devil Me:I have cancer for God's sake, cant he be a little flexible. Does he even know how bad these hot flashes feel.
If it were him he would have me nursing him all day. Men, they are so selfish!!

Angel Me: Your hubby is an angel. how can you forget how he sat up all night after your surgery. He has been understanding and caring.
For the past few months he has been balancing work, home and medical bills.
Give him a break; poor guy he is suffering from cold, though its a minor illness, dont you know its symptoms are awful.
Give in, say sorry!!

All through the night the devil and the angel kept at me, but by morning  thankfully the angel one.
As soon as I said Sorry, my hubby reciprocated, he was sorry too...make up time..:)

All is well at home now. Well the issue is not resolved yet, but experiences from our past fights tells me, next time the issue crops
up we will have some sort of compromise ready.

So for now I declare.

Cancer: 0
My marriage: 1

I'm glad that's how it turned out, Gouri. And yes, I'm sure you'll work something out; marriage is a never-ending compromise between two people who WANT to be good to one another, so you'll figure this one out, too. For me and my husband, it was a simple matter of him sleeping under many layers of covers in a cooler room, and me sleeping on top of the covers with a light sheet over me that I'd throw off during the flashes. It's kind of a funny physical dynamic - it's hard for him to turn over with me weighting down the covers on one side! – but it works pretty well. Give it a try - PJH

What a great story! If only it were just a story and not reality!

i havent written about it yet, but I too am on the couch sometimes because of hot waves that come from who knows where! If my hubby's toe even inches on me, it can send a wave of heat through me that is clammy as well as agitating! Good for Angel Gouri!

Hang in there! peglove
