Tamoxifen (Nolvadex) Effectiveness: Something to worry about?Over my morning coffee and one of the three daily newspapers I read I see a note “Panel seeks Cancer-Drug Warning” hot off the AP wire. Here's a link to other outlets that reported on it.It turns out that an FDA panel wants to...

I love Dr. Knopf's refreshing openness and honesty. I like my Onc Doc, but he hates my questions, even when I try to ask in non-threatening way. Most Onc Docs are overwhelmed as it is, and can't keep up with "breaking news." Thanks!

Dear Dr. Knopf

Have you got any update on this useful information about Tamoxifen?  I've just taking it and have heard that there is a relationship between side effects experienced and the effectiveness of the drug.  The doctor who told me this was unclear though whether the presence or absence of side effects signifed increased effectiveness!  He said it did have to do with the way the drug metabolises.

Any information you have would be very welcome.

Many thanks

Jo

Dear Dr. Knopf & Jo,

My Oncologist also told me the more side effects I had, night sweats, hot flashes, meant the Tamoxifen was working, and O would have to learn to deal with it.  I also got terrible legs cramps and joint pains so severe I started falling down and had to use a cane and wheelchair.  I rarely leave the house and I'm in bed most of the time now.  I finally decided to stop taking it, as my quality of life was so bad.  The pains in my joints stopped after a while and I can walk again.

I pray the cancer doesn't come back but I couldn't continue taking Tamoxifen, Arimadex, or Femara as they all effected me the same way.

Thank you for your insite and guidance through some rough times.

God Bless you both.

Joyce

Joyce, I'm so glad you feel better. Sometimes quality of life trumps whatever drug wer'e taking. After all, if a life-saving drug makes your life so miserable you barely want to live it - well, that's an equation that simply doesn't work. Best of luck to you, and I hope you continue to feel better and better as the weeks go by. Take care- PJH
