Living with Metastasis

By Laurie Kingston, Health Guide Wednesday, June 04, 2008
“Metastasis.”   I think of myself as someone with a pretty good vocabulary, yet before I was diagnosed with breast cancer, it was a word I had never heard.   Breast cancer has become metastatic when the cancer has spread (in the case of breast cancer, this is usually, bu...

Hi Laura,

My cancer was stage 3a (big tumour, four lymph nodes). I had a mastectomy, six rounds of chemo and 35 radiation treatments. I know many, many women who were in my situation who have not developed mets (and some, unfortunately, with very early stage cancer who have). In general, the smaller (and slower growing) the tumour the better, especially if there is no lymph node involvement. Another important factor are the hormone receptors and her2 status (hormone positive cancer is considered easier to treat). And then luck has a lot to do with it, too.

The thing to remember is that every cancer is different and each of us may respond differently when a whole host of factors are taken into account.

Good luck to you (and please feel free to send me a private message if you want to get into more details).

laurie

thank you for your reply you are a great blessing to all of us just strating on this road.

i was given a lymph node biopsy today and was told that from the informal test they gave in the office it looks clear i donot know if others could have something or if the first one is clear they might all be clear also they said that the biopsy sample was going to be sent to the pathology lab for the formal testing and the report would be done by the lab. my cancer is grade 1 but i donot know the stage i have at least 4 masses each no bigger than a cm. my doc says i have to have a mastecomy because there is more then 2 i do feel much better now and real positive i will not go down without a big big big cat fight! also how do i send a private post to you?

Laurie, thank for sharing your spectacular story. No matter how brave I think I'm learning to be, I still have such a deep dark fear of the dreaded Mets or Recurrence. You make me fear less and live more. Bless you Laurie. Please keep us posted.
