None of us wants to think about dying when we are young and well, I guess. And insurance companies make their money from insuring the healthy and gambling we will stay well.

Laurie, thanks for this very good reminder of how important it is to take care of financial issues before the crisis. I think most of us are like you. Unless we have personal experience, it's hard to find the time or money for financial planning. My husband insisted that we get life insurance in our 20's, even before we had children because his father died suddenly at age 51 without insurance. Nevertheless, we didn't start thinking about long-term care insurance until later. We knew better than to try to get it for me right after my cancer diagnosis, but we did try about seven years later only to be denied because of my history with a Stage III cancer.
