Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

If you are having problems with your insurance company please read...

Hello again ladies. Someone here has inspired me and given me a great idea. I'm so excited! Ladies tell me what you think about this...

I was thinking about getting as many women together to march, here in Atlanta, for a problem many women are having with their insurance company. As many of you already know, many insurance companies cover wigs as a "cranial prosthesis." They have a set way that you submit your claim for reimbursement. Even when you send in all the correct information the company still finds a way to deny your claim. And if you appeal the decision with the correct paperwork for a second time they may or may not approve it. This is ridiculous and they must be stopped! You pay your premiums and they should cover a natural replacement for your hair. Even the companies that do cover the wigs only pay between $200-$375, which only gets a wig that makes you look like Dolly Parton (no offense.) This may be a little extreme but I believe insurance should cover a "cranial prosthesis" the same way they cover a prosthetic arm or leg. Actually if they knew any better they would realize that a natural wig would save them time and money in the long run. It has been proven that wigs uplift your spirit, which causes you to recover at a better rate.

So, I was thinking it would be a really good idea for us all to get together and peacefully march pass CNN headquarters, which is right here in Atlanta. It would also be a good idea for us all to wear PINK wigs! I think this would really stir up some good attention to the issue.

Let me know what you think. Special thanks to koponen, for your wonderful pink wig idea!

Just wanted to say Hi!

Mika,

Nice idea! Better yet, march with pink wigs at a presidential-campaign-trail gathering point for even greater exposure, with HUGE signs that draw attention to breast cancer advocacy, prevention and research. You're brilliant!

Best,

Maria

How about marching bald!  Unless, of course, the weather is sunny or cold.  You don't realize how important hair is for protecting the scalp from the sun and for keeping you warm until you're bald.  Unfortunately, many insurance companies aren't very good about providing any kind of prosthesis, not just wigs.  My first insurance company paid for one prosthesis in full, but not for replacements.  I asked what they would do for little kids who were double amputees, and was told they got one per lifetime just like anyone else.  Other insurance policies I've had since then, have had varying policies, but have usually provided replacements once a year but not paying for the entire bill.  I wasn't covered for wigs.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, this is true, we need hair. And its ridiculous how the insurance companies ignore such an important issue like this. We have to do something about it! Marching bald is a great idea but family and friends may not be bald. If we all wear pink wigs it will stand out because even family and friends can participate.
