What a wonderfully sensible post, Phyllis. Great advice. I use my FSA (Flex) account all the time - it pays for aspirin and over-the-counter drugs, as well as dental bills, co-pays, deductibles, physical therapy - anything medical/dental that insurance won't pay for. And I love that you pointed your advice at those of us in the middle class - a huge "silent majority" that seems to fall through every crack there is when it's time to offer a helping hand. I do work three jobs - but I'm not poor. Just paying college bills. I'm thankful I have a house, my health, family, and at the end of the day have enough $$ to go get a 99¢ ice cream cone at Friendly's when I feel like it (and my diet lets me!). PJH

I guess it's not the number of jobs that counts, but what you can buy with what you earn.  I want to be sensitive to the fact that some people have cut the budget to the bone and still struggle to meet the most basic bills.  There is no sense in scolding them for choosing food over health insurance.  I also think that most people can plan better to be prepared for the medical costs that catch up with everyone who lives long enough.  I am hopeful that a health plan will come out of Congress that relieves some of this stress, but there will always be expenses that insurance doesn't cover.  Thanks for your comment.
