Alone With My Dad

In the living room, my dad was sitting in the dark. He was wearing his shoes in the house (very exceptional behavior for him). Of his face, I could only see his open eyes through the gloom: they stared blankly into the open space of the room. His shoulders were hunched from elbows propped on his knees, and his hands were held out before him, like... Read moreChevron

A Hospital Visit

The hospital by our house is immense. I live in a fairly rural area, and the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center makes everything within 50 miles look like Legos. She really let it get to the final strand before taking the next step, but she finally shaved it all off.   I'm remembering her hair of course, or lack thereof. I suppose it would have been something if my mom was a young hipster... Read moreChevron

What Happened When My Mom Couldn't Go to the Circus

If I were to describe the event that shook me, that made me realize that, yes, my mom had breast cancer, and yes, she might die, it would be this. The circus came to town every year, and every year me, my mom, and my dad went to see it. I got cotton candy and popcorn and arched my neck to see the trapeze artists, and made fun of the... Read moreChevron
