Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Wednesday, May 13, 2009 njmom39, Community Member, asks

Q: Right before my period I noticed a lump in my breast that grew larger and more painful as my period

my doctor said it is most likely a cyst, but after the ultrasound, the doctor said it is a solid mass, and rated it low risk.  It has shrunk to the size of a small pimple. I am very nervous it is cancer.  What are the chances it is cancer?  Should I be as panicked as I am. I am going for a needle biopsy in 2 weeks.

Hi - This sounds very much like fibrocystic breast tissue, which is simply a normal overgrowth of breast tissue - not cancer. The key is that the lump changes with your period; a cancerous lump would remain the same size throughout your cycle, and probably wouldn't hurt. It's good you're getting a "just in case" biopsy, but I wouldn't worry about it. Even when you get to the biopsy point, about 85% are negative (no cancer). So take a deeeeeep breath - and relax! Good luck - PJH
