Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Saturday, October 16, 2010 irene asks

Q: Hi! Can one take Femara for one year, and switch to Arimidex?

Arimidex is now available in the generic form, less than $60.00 for 90 days.   I am in a doghnut hole. Want to switch, but I am concerned regarding the switch...

My oncologist doesn't want to "speculate" on the subject, plus my insurance refuses to allow the generic form in the first six months after the FDA approval.

YOur oncologist must have had a good reason for starting you on Femara rather than Arimidex. Find out exactly why he thinks Femara would be better for you. If he doesn't have any specific reason, then I don't see why you wouldn't consider a switch to Arimidex: the two drugs accomplish the same thing, namely, preventing your body from producing estrogen. So, do a bit of research, wait 6 months, and you may fnind yourself paying a lot less for your aromatase inhibitor- PJH
