Sunday, March 01, 2009 Violet Jules asks

Q: Really intensive itching in right breast and sometimes in both breasts. Have I got breast cancer?

Am extrememly concerned about itchy breasts, that began intensley itching about a month ago.  No lumps as I have been checking breasts regulary no discharge or crusting around the nipple either, jush itchy breasts, the right one in particular.  Am so afraid i have got breast cancer, am making an appointment with my doctor tomorrow after reading your signs and symptons of breast cancer included itchy breasts.  Am extremely worried and frightened I could have developed this form of breast cancer.  Julie.

Violet, while it is true that itching can be one symptom of a relatively rare form of breast cancer called inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), usually the itching would be accompanied by swelling, redness, and other symptoms.  The itching I felt when I first started having IBC symptoms was deep in my breast, not itching on top of the skin.  All of my symptoms were on one side.  For more information about distinguishing between itching that might be cancer and other types, you might want to read this column.  This is the time of year when many people are plagued by dry itchy skin, and breasts, which have delicate skin and often enclosed in bras that can rub or irritate, are especially prone to this problem.  Check with the doctor is you do develop redness, scaly skin, and/or swelling.  The doctor may also be able to prescribe the best cream to help with the itching.

Phyllis is right, Violet - any symptom affecting both breasts, rather than just one, has very little chance of being cancer. Which doesn't mean you shouldn't get it looked at - sounds very uncomfortable! But please don't stress about cancer, OK? Hope you find some relief soon. PJH

My situation is a little different as I am itching only on one breast. I itched so much today it looks like a rash. I had a mamogram in January and due to have another one in July since they did not have a previous one to go back on and there was some shadowing but my doctor said not be concerned, mostly like benign. Do I have cause to be concerned now that I have an itch situation in one breast. I put itching cream and it really did not work and have not changed anything else like deterengents so not quite sure.
