Marie, please read our post on bone loss associated with the use of aromatase inhibitors. It's an issue, for sure. If you're taking (or about to start taking) an AI, be sure you've had a baseline DEXA scan. That way, you can track how your bones are doing throughout the course of your AI treatment.

You may need to take drugs to help prevent osteoporosis; and you should definitely make sure you're doing everything possible you can, lifestyle-wise, to ensure bone health - no smoking, cut back on drinking, exercise (especially weight-bearing exercise), sufficient calcium and vitamin D. Good luck - PJH

Thanks for the info.  My very recent (2/10) baseline bone density scan showed  bone weakening, but not yet actual osteoperosis.  Therefore, after speaking to my oncologist, if I was to start on the Arimidex as of now, then he would start me on Fosomax or Boniva ASAP as well.  I currently take Calcium w/600 mg of vitamin D.

Marie, I've been taking Arimidex for nearly 5 years, and Actonel for a year, due to osteopenia (not osteoporosis). You might want to up your calcium to 1500mg and your vitamin D to 1000mg - ask your doctor about those levels, OK? Good luck - PJH
