Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, August 20, 2009 BarbaraR asks

Q: Should I worry about size of area growing .5 cm in 5 days?

During my needle biopsy yesterday, the technician said to the doctor that the area had grown from 2.7 to 3.2 - is this something I should worry about? The time frame was 5 days, I am still waiting (nervously) about the results. And this comment is bugging me in particular.  During my mammagram 2 cluster spots were detected (8 days ago).  The doctors and technicians are moving quickly with the 2nd mammagram (6 days ago) and the needle biopsy done yesterday on both areas.

Barbara, breast cancer is usually quite slow growing; it can take years to reach a size you can actually feel. On the other hand, a fibroadenoma (non-cacerous tumor) can grow quite quickly, as it often changes in synch with your period. But the only way you'll know for sure is to get the results. Waiting is tough, I know; but it sounds like you've moved as quickly as possible, and are getting good care. So hang in there - and I hope you get good news. PJH

Thanks for your response - evidently what i overheard has nothing to do with my cancer (yes it was positive).  One site is 6 cm the second is 4.   The 2 sites are a couple inches apart - mastectomy is recommended as so much tissue would need to be removed, any reconstruction from a lumptectomy would be difficult - 5-6 inches to be removed.  -- BarbaraR

Oh, Barbara, sorry your news wasn't better.... Please stay in touch here, we can help you through this. A mastectomy definitely sounds like the way to go. I assume you'll choose reconstruction? For information about that, please take a look at our reconstruction FAQS; this link will get you started, and just keep following the links at the bottom of each piece. Good luck to you - PJH
