Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Q: recurrance of breast cancer in same breast after 12 yrs free. treatment usually reccomended?

I had a lumpectomy/radiation 12 years ago.  Now diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma near previous incision site.  What type of treatment is usually recommended since it is the second time and won't radiation or chemo. cause further damage to the same area.  I now have much tenderness on the side of the breast and around the body towards the back since previous radiation.  I also have about a 4 inch line of red (looks like broken blood vessels) going sideways under my arm on the side of the breast.

Hi - Please report this pain and the red spots to your oncologist ASAP; s/he'll want to know about this.

I'd imagine the surgeon will recommend a mastectomy for you, as a lumpectomy might prove cosmetically unsatisfactory. And, as you say, you might be able to get away with no radiation, if you have a mastectomy.

As for chemo - unless you had adriamycin or a drug that can result in heart damage last time, another round of chemo wouldn't necessarily be ruled out.And even with adriamycin, they might decide it's worth it, knowing they'll have to be monitoring your heart closely.

At any rate, these are questions to ask both your surgeon and your oncologist, OK? Good luck to you - PJH
