Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, August 13, 2009 Ann asks

Q: I am investigating if Arimidex is my next option. I am 61 years old.

I had a slow growing cancer removed in my left breast via a lumpectomy in April. I went thru 5 weeks of radiation. I have been told that the cancer was very slow growing, and the size was less than a pencil eraser. I am investigating if Arimidex is my next option. I have elevated Cholesterol, mild diabetes and Gallstones, with an slight increase in liver function. My family history includes arthritis and diabetes. Based on what I have read, I am not sure this drug is the way for me. Any advice?

Ann, it's a tough choice - you simply have to balance benefit and cost. Your doctor will tell you how much Arimidex should lower your risk of recurrence. You need to mentally and emotionally weigh that against almost certain bone density loss; perhaps elevated cholesterol; and probably bone and joint pain. Is it worth it? Only you can decide. Is it the only choice? Yes, for preventing recurrence, basically it is.

You might try it for, say, a year; see how you feel, see how it affects you. If your cholesterol is OK and your bones don't seem to be too badly affected, and you feel OK - maybe stay on it for the full course. Something to think about.

Good luck - PJH

Thank you!! I am investigating all my options. And talking with several Doctors and patients to get as much information as I can. It's too sad that there are not more user friendly options available. Thank you for your information  :)
