Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Q: 13, with a small red lump on my nipple?

I'm a 13 year old female, and I just noticed yesterday that I have a small red, irregular looking lump on my left nipple. It doesn't hurt, but the day before I found it, my left breast was hurting. At first I took the pain to be nothing, figuring I'd just been hit some time during the day, but now I'm kind of nervous because my family does have cancer in its past, my aunt and great aunt had it. I'm going to tell my mom about it, but does anyone have any idea what the lump is from, or how I could tell my mom without feeling awkward?

I think you don't have anything to worry about. Please read our Teen Guide to Breast Development; I think it'll really help set your mind at ease. Kudos to you, though, for being aware of breast changes, even at your young age. As for telling your mom, sometimes it's easiest to write a note and put it somewhere where she'll see it. Then she'll come to you - easier than you going to her! Good luck - PJH
