Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Monday, February 16, 2009 Diane asks

Q: POST CHEMO/RADIATION HAIR GROWTH

I WAS DIAGNOSED IN 2004 WITH BREAST CANCER; UNDERWENT BOTH CHEMO AND RADIATION!! WHEW HOOOO I AM A SURVIVOR!!! HOWEVERRRRRR, MY HAIR SEEMS TO BE SOMEWHAT STUBBORN AS TO REGROWTH. MIND YOU I HAVE A HEAD OF HAIR, BUT IT HAS A TENDANCY TO BREAK AND IS STILL QUITE THIN COMPAIRED TO BEFORE THE TREATMENT. MY NATURAL HAIR IS BLONDE, AND FORMALLY VERY LONG, THICK AND STRONG. I HAVE TRIED NUMEROUS TOPICALS WITH NOT MUCH RESULT. I TAKE .125 MG OF SYNTHOID DAILY TO ASSIST WITH MY THYROID. I AM VERY ATHLETIC, THEREFORE MY LIFESTYLE IS NOT SEDENTARY.

I SEE OTHER SURVIVORS YEARS POST TREATMENT WITH A "THICK" HEAD OF HAIR. I WOULD LUV TO HAVE MY FULLNESS BACK WITHOUT ONGOING BREAKAGE. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Congratulations on getting back into an active life style after your cancer treatments.  Many people have their hair come back a different texture and/or color after chemo.  My straight hair came back curly and over the last ten years has become a bit straighter, but it has never gone back to its before chemo state.  Since hair changes can also be related to thyroid issues, you might want to be sure to discuss this with the doctor who prescribes your thyroid medication.  I've heard people complain about their hair being thinner after chemo, but I don't recall others having the breakage issue you describe.  Ask and see if the doctor thinks the hair is a symptom of thyroid issues.
