Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Friday, August 21, 2009 fowvay asks

Q: How do I figure out if I have more MRSA or New Breast Cancer?

After mastectomy for DCIS, I tried reconstruction twice.  Silicone leaked and was explanted less than 3 weeks after implantation.  Then I had a lat dorsi flap and expander.  Less than a month later I got a MRSA abcess in the excess skin from the June operation.  I had surgery in July.  Since then my sternum hurts so badly and I have a lump by the cartiledge.  My GP sent me to oncologist.  I think I have MRSA osteomyelitis, and now I wonder if they think I have sternum cancer.  I am worried. Denise, you say, "I wonder if they think I have sternum cancer" - why not ask directly what they think? I'd guess your GP is sending you back to the oncologist because this could be a treatment-related issue - scar tissue from the operation, something along that line. It would be incredibly rare to develop a metastasis from DCIS; and that's what bone cancer would almost certainly be. So please try not to worry; I'm sure among them, your doctors will get to the bottom of this issue soon, and provide you some relief. Good luck - PJH
