Q: Provera for endometrial hyperplasia and risk of breast CA (h/o ductal hyperplasia)?

Should my aunt take Provera for endometrial hyperplasia with a history of ductal hyperplasia (no atypia)? What is the risk of developing breast CA if she does take it? My aunt is 44 year old MR, PCOS, obese, peri-menopausal...first degree relative deceased secondary to metastatic breast CA. She is s/p lumpectomy- ductal hyperplasia without atypia- but is also at "increased risk" of developing endometrial CA (no biopsy results available to me) and has not had a period for 3 months. She does not tolerate any type of procedure well, she is MR. MD wants to place her on Provera to shed her endometrium, but her guardian (my other aunt) is nervous about this secondary to her recent diagnosis of ductal hyperplasia.

Thank you,

Lori MPAS, PA-C

Lori - We're not medical professionals answering these questions; unfortunately, I don't understand some of your shorthand.

That said, women who've had breast cancer are cautioned against taking Provera, as estrogen/progesterone can increase your risk. Since your aunt hasn't had breast cancer, it might be OK for her to take - but it's a fine line, isn't it seeing she has hyperplasia?

Best you should use your own considerable knowledge of the situation to help her make a decision. Good luck - PJH
