Can post-menopausal women with hormone receptor-negative (ER/PR-negative) take an AI like Arimidex?

Nesa

Dear Expert,

I'm an old woman and I had a tumor in my one breast.I had radical mastectomy and my ER/PR test is negative . I was told  hormon therapy is not effective to me because I am hormon negative receptor. Also I can't take chemotherapy . Now is taking an AI like Arimidex useful or necessary for me? If yes is there any major side effects for old women like me to neglect it?

Thanks a lot.

Nesa, since and AI is effective only for ER/PR-receptive breast cancer, unfortunately it wouldn't help you. There's no hormone therapy of drug that I know of that would work for you, unless you're HER2-neu receptive, in which case you could take Herceptin. You didn't say if your cancer is invasive, or if lymph nodes are involved, but I'm thinking probably the doctor has recommended just the right treatment for you, post-mastectomy - best of luck. PJH
