a question to mam pjhamel, heath guide., last january 2012 , i go for a zonogram test and advise me to go for a mammogram because she said she saw a lump on my both breast, but my doctor they reffered to me ask me to have an operation to take off the lump. then i decide first to go for a mammogram to see the result before opertion that my doctors advice. when i get the result , i read , it says , a benign lump detected in my left breast but just advised me to go back again after one year fo a mammogram,, i really confused what to do , if i go for operation or i wait one year to go for a mammogram again.,, but then my vacation is finish so i go back to hongkong to work, the previous months i feel pain in my breast like tender, pain f i touch, i can feel even im sleeping but then off and on the pain. i realised one year past alreay the time i do my mammogram, now i dont know where to go for my test which is better for me, to do in hongkong. so i can work at same time or to go to st.luke in manila, for im thinking of good equipment, or i go to the place i do my test last year in baguio city thats my place. is all mammogram equipment the same in the province or city or in st.luke manila??/??please help ,,, i really confused what to do and where to go the best for myself. actually there are times that i lost hope , just wait what gonna happen to me because im lack of financial for i have 4 children to support and im a single mother because i was separeted 10 yrs ago and no help from my ex-husband.

I'm sorry you have to go through this worrisome waiting. Since your mammogram came back clear last year, and they felt it safe for you to wait and just get rechecked this year, chances are this isn't cancer. Breast pain such as you describe (as well as the fact lumps were identified in both breasts) could be a sign of fibrocystic change, a sometimes painful but basically harmless condition that's quite common in women from their 20s to their 50s.

That said, you should probably pursue this, since it's a breast change and breast changes need to be diagnosed and treated, if necessary. Mammogram machines provide the same results wherever you are, so location isn't important; however, in order to see if there's been any change from last year, you need to provide last year's film (or digital scans) to whatever hospital does your mammogram this year. Your decision is, is it easier for you to go back to the original place you had your mammogram, since they already have your results; or to stay where you are, avoid a trip, and obtain last year's films?

Your other option is a biopsy (or surgery to remove the lump), which would tell you for sure if there's any cancer. As I said earlier, your symptoms don't point to this being cancer; but removing it and sampling tissue is the only way to know for sure.

Please don't lose hope. Millions of women go through this every year, and the vast majority don't have cancer. For your mental and emotional peace, however, I think you have to pursue this as best you can. Good luck - PJH

Hi mam Florida,  I've read your question to Ms. PJ,  I suggest you wait for one year. And do another digital mammogram next year (but you should not forget to have your mammo next year) its important inorder to monitor your lump on your breast.  The digital mammogram in st. luke's is 2,557 pesos.  Philhealth can only be used during hospital confinement (it cannot be use during procedure or test).  You may contact me mam if you need help or assistance.  Laughing Connie Gonzaga here, I am a medical secretary at a cancer clinic... 09162708510

Hi mam Florida, I suggest do not have an operation yet and wait for another year.  And then next year have a digital mammogram again.  In order to monitor the lumps in your breast (BUT DO NOT FORGET TO HAVE YOUR DIGITAL MAMMOGRAM next year).  And yes you can use your philhealth on st. lukes but it can only be used during hospital confinement.  You may have your digital mammogram even there in hongkong as long as you bring your old mammogram results so they can compare it with the new mammogram result.  If you need help or assistance you may contact me at 09162708510. I'm Connie.  I am a medical secretary at a cancer clinic.  And both of my doctors are medical oncologist.  And our clinic is at St. Lukes Global City.

Your welcome... =) that price range is throughout the city... price in the province might be a little higher but it will always depend on the facility and the brand of the equipment that theyre using... this is the telephone number of St. Lukes Medical Center Global City, Philippines (Breast Center: 789-77-00 local 2079) so they can inquire directly.  Im really glad to help and I hope I can share more here..  My Godmother is also a breast cancer survivor.  And I work as a medical secretary at St. Lukes Medical Center Global City both of my boss are Medical Oncologist.  If I can help through sharing ideas and by somehow answering questions here I will...... :D

hi rhea, there are a lot of tests whether it is to confirm if it is a breast cancer or a test to screen for breast cancer.  If you want you can let me know what specific test that you want to inquire then I will inquire it on the hospital I am working with (St. Luke's Medical Center Global City) then I will inform you how much does it cost. I would be happy to help you... =)

Florida, mammotone is actually a type of biopsy using images of your breast to guide the surgeon to the right spot to take a sample; so it's not the same thing as a mammogram. As for zonogram, I'm sorry, I can't find any information on that, and have never heard of it... PJH

Maybe zonogram is a different spelling for what is called a sonogram in the US. A sonogram is good at telling the difference between a solid lump and a fluid-filled cyst. It doesn't use radiation and used in combination with mammograms is very effective in helping doctors diagnose breast problems. Reply

Florida, a 3D mammogram is a type of mammogram called digital tomosynthesis; it's not widely available, but does provide a clearer, more complete picture of the breast than a standard mammogram. A digital mammogram is a standard mammogram where results are stored digitally, on a computer; rather than on a physical piece of film. Hope this helps - PJH
