Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Q: repeated mastitis- and i've never been pregnant!

I had mastitis in my left breast in Feb. A month ago I had it in my right breast. This time they thought there was an absess and I had ultrasounds and they tried draining it twice. Both cases- my breast was kind of sore and then I went to bed and woke up with full on mastitis. Fever, swollen red breast, flu like body aches, the shakes. This last time when they did the ultrasound they found a 'non-related cyst' in the same breast the infection was in and I am sceduled to have a formal ultrasound in a month to find out what's up with that. It had to be two months out so my breast could fully heal and the lump from the mastitis would be gone. Tonight my dog bumped my breast and I felt it. It seems like there is a new lump where they said the cyst was. The absess (that they never got any pus out of) was to the right side of my nipple. This lump is slightly above and to the left of my nipple. did it travel? is it the same lump? do i need to try to get in sooner? am i freaking out about nothing? why am i getting mastitis in the first place!?!?! I have no breaks in my skin and have never been knocked up, let alone nursed. And now i'm 28 and have had this twice in less than 10 months in different breasts....

Sorry you're having to go through this. As we're a breast cancer site, we don't really concentrate or feel comfortable talking about other breast issues, like mastitis. However, lumps in your breast are always a concern, since they can turn out to be cancer. I'd suggest you get a referral to a breast specialist. S/he can give you a thorough workup, try to discover why you've had two bouts of mastitis, and figure out what these various lumps are that you're feeling. So please ask you regular doctor for a referral; and if you don't have a regular doctor, ask at your nearest hospital for names of breast specialists. Good luck - PJH
