Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 Summer Rose asks

Q: I have had a lump in my breast I noticed 7 months ago which has become increasingly painful and the pain extends under my arm and down my arm. I have an appt aat the breast clinic on September 7th

I had an appointment in January for a ultrasound which the doctor refused to do a biopsy on the lump because he said they couldn' see it on the scan even though they could feel it. I can't stop thinking about it so have seen my gp and she said she can feel a definite lump and has booked me an appointment in 13 days time. Anyone has a similar experience? Does this sound like bad news?? So worried :-(

Hi - Considering this is something they couldn't see on the scan, it might very well be a cyst, which will appear clear on most scans; whereas a solid tumor would show up as white, and very noticeable.

Please read our post on fibrocystic change, which talks about cysts and other painful (non-cancerous) breast conditions. Especially if you're a younger women, in your 20s or 30s, fibrocystic change is quite common.

Breast cancer lumps are usually not painful; nor do they send pain into your armpit or down your arm. I'm glad you're meeting with a breast specialist to ascertain what this is; but I hope you don't worry too much in the meantime, because what you're experiencing isn't a typical cancer symptom. Also - if they were truly worried about this, I'd think they wouldn't make you wait 2 weeks for an appointment, right? Good luck - PJH

Hi there thankyou so much for that you have made me feel a lot better. The doctor did say because of my age (I'm 29) to try not to worry but of course I do know its not totally unheard of. Hopefully you are right and it is a cyst or something like that. I did breastfeed both my children til they were nearly 2 and I believe breastfeeding guards against breastfeeding. I'm still worried (because I am a worrier!) but you have definately made me feel a bit happier thankyou for your reply.

When I had a lump in my right breast, it wasn't painful at all and I had no pain in my arm or my armpit.  Do not sit there and worry about this, because it will only make you more nervous when the time comes for you to have the actual test and you will tense up and that will not help with the pain.  Pray, continue to go on with your life and rest.  God will not put more on you than you can bear.

Hi there thankyou for your reply. Do you mind if I ask you - what was your lump caused by? I am trying my hardest not to worry and everyone around me is being so kind as you have been. Thankyou again

Well,

I did have breast cancer but my sister went through this a couple of months ago and her turned out to be a cyst.  Mine was hard and it did not seem to grow or hurt.  It was just there.  She worried too and I told her not too because our symptoms were totally different.
