Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Tuesday, November 25, 2008 Heather Glass asks

Q: What are some survival statistics for patients who use chemotherapy in cancer treatment?

I am researching alternative cancer therapies.  I need to know where I can find solid statistics about the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiation in general and also if there are any statistics on other cancer treatment's effectiveness.

thanks for your help - Heather

Heather, you'll have a hard time finding this information, as the's really no "in general" with cancer treatment: each case is specific unto itself. The chemo that reduces YOUR recurrence rate by 16% might be totally ineffective for your next-door neighbow with breast cancer. In general, chemo and radiation have both been proven to reduce the rate of breast cancer recurrence—by varying percentages.

That said, you might begin your research with the National Cancer Institute's breast cancer Web site; continue with the American Cancer Society's Web site; and maybe try the National Institutes of Health, as well. You should also ask your oncologist, as (s)he will have your own personalized statistics for any kind of treatment being considered. Good luck - PJH
