Q: Im 25 and for the past year I have had some issues with my right breast can you help im worried

Hi I cant help but be concerned about the possibility of having breast cancer. Im 25 and for the past year I have had some issues with my right breast. there are a few symptoms I wanted to ask around about. 1) I have a dark blue discharge and it can be expressed but typically doesnt leak on its own and if it does I only notice when I wear a white bra ofcourse. 2) It can go from over sensitive to numb at any given time. I had a sonogram done a few yrs ago and they said I had lumpy breast syndrome or something like that, but also on my right breast they wanted to look at it more cause it had an area that they werent too sure about and it was a deep glandular area behind the nipple. 3)I get random spurts of awkward pain on the right side of the breast as well like a cluster of tiny needle tips pricking at once. 4) the right breast seems more lumpy and it can sometimes feel hot to the touch in the area under my nipple and then my nipple feels like its on fire. I am not on any medications and I know nothing really of my mothers side of the family but my mother did pass away at the age of 26 in her sleep. I was administered a shot after my last pregnancy in 2007 to dry up my milk cause I got a cyst or something all i know is it was the size of a golfball. I never noticed anything wrong with my breast beside that milk issue till after my car accident in 2009 I saw the blue discharge for the first time in jan of 2010. The other breast has no discharge at all not even when expressing is tried, please if you know anything or can help Im really worried.

Danielle, all of these symptoms could be related to hormonal changes, breastfeeding, and/or trauma from your accident; so try not to panic.  You do need to be seeing a doctor every year for a breast exam.  Your doctor will make a note of how much "lumpiness" you have and discuss whether your discharge is in the normal range.  It is not unusual for the right and left breast to have some differences in size and lumpiness.  The most worrisome thing you mention is that sometimes the discharge does occur spontaneously and is enough to stain your bra.  Discharge doesn't mean you have cancer; it could also be a wart-like growth called a papilloma or some other problem irritating your milk ducts.  Call the doctor and schedule a physical that includes a breast exam.
