Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Friday, March 27, 2009 Page Holloway asks

Q: BRCA testing

I have been diagnosed with metaplastic carcinoma, triple negative, stage 3, breast cancer, I have completed my chemo and was waiting on my BRCA testing results before we do surgery.  The problem is my test came back inconclusive, actually the mutation that they stated is a variant of uncertain significance.  Confused me more.  Know I need to know what other people have done, lumpectomy, masectomy, (I have a large family history of breast cancer, only one in my age group (39), ) I really don't know what to do.

Hi Page - My gut feeling, being triple negative, is that you should have a mastectomy, rather than lumpectomy. You'll probably have chemo (do you have positive nodes?), and maybe radiation, too, if they feel the cancer might have invaded your chest wall. What conclusive BRCA results would probably tell you is whether you should consider a bilateral mastectomy (both breasts). So - that's something to consider, as it would definitely lower your chance of a new breast cancer by about 90%. Ask if your hospital or cancer center has a "centre for shared decision making," or something along those lines. It's a group of trained medical personnel who can answer your quesitons and help you think through your decision. If not, ask for n extended appointment with your oncologist, and go prepared with a thorough list of questions - everything you cnan think of to help you make up your mind. Then - once you do - just do it. No looking back, no "I should have..." "I wish I'd..." Jump off the cliff: you don't know where you'll land, but that's OK. Bottom line: no guilt. There are metaplastic support groups online, try Googling and see what you find. Best of luck to you, Page. PJH
