What could this pea-sized lump be?
I found a pea-sized lump in my left breast about a month ago... I just assumed it was scar tissue from a cyst I had removed last year (from the outside of my breast by a dermatologist). I saw her last week and asked if what I felt was due to the removal of my cyst and she said I need to get a mammogram. I called my doctor and was given an appointment immediately. He felt it and said that the bump was about a 1/2 an inch away from the scar. He said it could be three things... scar tissue, a cyst, or something that needs further testing. I'm having a mammogram and ultrasound on Monday, but he said it may not show anything. I guess my question is... When I go to get these tests done, will they tell me immediately if they see something? I do feel this lump and want to know what it could be. Does anyone have any experiences with a small lump at the bottom of their breast? It seems I read a lot about lumps under the armpits. I'm not too worried, but maybe some advice from someone that has been there wouldn't hurt.
By the way, I'm 41 and the lump has not grown or changed location. Thank you!
Trcia, it sounds like your doctor is right on top of this - could be scar tissue, could be another cyst, and unfortunately it could be breast cancer—as could ANY lump in your breast, of which the vast majority are NOT breast cancer. But that's why we get these things checked out - to determine exactly what's up and to rule out cancer. I don't believe they'll tell you anything immediately; usually they have to spend some time closely examining what they see, especially on the mammogram. But while you're there, ask when you'll hear the results, and if they don't contact you, get right on them; you don't want to be left hanging. If the next step is a biopsy, don't panic - something like 85% of biopsies show benign lumps. So - one step at a time. Be diligent - but don't be scared (as it sounds like you're not - good for you!) - Good luck - PJH
