Tracy, I think it's your body and your should do exactly what you want. Statistically speaking, there's no difference in survival rates for women who get a mastectomy, vs. lumpectomy/radiation. However, if a mastectomy is going to set your mind at ease, then it's the right decision for you.
And I'm sure you can handle reconstruction; I found chemo much more difficult than reconstruction. Be sure to evaluate all your options before deciding on a type of surgery, OK? Implants, and autologous (body tissue) are types of reconstruction that may be available to you, and each has their pros and cons.
