Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Wednesday, August 20, 2008 Wendy Spann asks

Q: I felt a lump and it disappeared. What does that mean?

I had been lifting heavy boxes of paper, and a few days later I started to have a sharp pain underneath my breast right above the rib cage, so laid flat on the bed and did a breast exam and the left breast had what felt like a lump. So the next morning when I awoke I checked and it was gone. And I checked Tuesday and it still not there. What does that mean?

Wendy, could have been a rib pulled a bit out of place; or a tightened muscle. Could have been lots of things. If you're sure you can no longer feel it, then no need to worry. Lumps that turn out to be tumors don't disappear; they're pretty stable, and fixed in one spot. So unless it comes back - I think you could probably write it off to over-exertion. But good for you, being aware of breast lumps; it's important to notice them, and deal with any breast changes. That's the way we protect ourselves from cancer. Good luck - PJH
