Q: I heard they are using Tamoxifan as a preventative if you have a strong family history.

 My mother had breast cancer 8 years ago and is 73 now.  My sister was diagnosed at 38 she has been 2 years cancer free. And, now my other sister was diagnosed at 45 just last week.  I am 46.  I also have Systemic lupus.  I also have 3 daughters -2-19 years old and 1- 18 years old,  Any advice at all?????????

Hi - Yes, I've heard about tamoxifen being used as a preventive for women with a strong family history. It looks like your family history is strong enough that you should be tested for abnormalities in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Please speak to a breast specialist about this - you can get a referral from your family doctor. I think insurance might pay for the testing, given your family history. Once you have the testing done, you'll have a much better idea of what course to take, given the results. Good luck - PJH
