Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, October 20, 2011 April asks

Q: I had a mastectomy and chemo over a year ago. I am still tired all the time and still recovering from reconstructive surgery. Any idea how long I will be feeling so tired and drained?

We're all different, April - there's no "norm" for recovering from breast cancer treatment. Chemo and surgery are aggressive treatments, designed to eliminate cancer; it's no wonder we have such a tough time recovering. Most women I know say it takes a solid 2 years, post-treatment, to really start to feel like yourself again.

That said - have you spoken to your doctor about this? S/he may be able to suggest something that could help. You might have anemia, or some other-post-treatment issue that's the cause of your fatigue. Personally, I found that exercise always made me feel better; even just a brisk walk outdoors. Good luck - I hope you start feeling better soon. PJH
