Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 Emma asks

Q: my left breast got bigger and the nipple partially inverted.

I had three children, all breastfed until two years of age. With my last one, after she was only feeding on one breast towards the end, I notice that my left breast got bigger and the nipple partially inverted. It happens mostly when I where the bra. My physician mentioned that she noticed my breast a little cystic too, I don't know if that was because I was ovulating at the time.

It's not clear to me whether this is a recent change or a long-standing difference.  From your description, it sounds like a breast feeding issue.  Have you talked to a lactation consultant?  Please stay in close touch with your doctor.  If the swelling doesn't subside or if it gets worse, ask for imaging tests and perhaps even a biopsy.  Ultrasounds are very good at finding cysts.  If cysts are the problem, they are not dangerous.
