Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, December 29, 2011 anastasia asks

Q: so i've had itchy nipples on my left breast for about 2 months. i applied some antibiotics when i saw scaliness and it resolved. but after 2 weeks came back again.

when it came back it just became itchy and started flaking. i don't scratch but the flakes won't go away. finally i stopped putting lotion on it. there are no more flakes but i can still feel that it's mildly itchy. should i be worried that it's paget's disease? is it a good sign if i put antibiotics and then it gets better only to come back the same time the next month (menstrual cycle?) or would paget's disease totally not respond to any dose of antibiotics?

Cancer isn't something that would typically respond to antibiotics. But a mild infection or skin irritation wouldn't go on and on, as yours has. It's time to see the doctor, Anastasia, to find out what's causing these symptoms, and have it treated. In the meantime, our post on itchy nipples might offer you some insight. Take care- PJH
