Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, May 29, 2008 Ms Tiffany asks

Q: All Negative Receptors

I don't understand what it means when all receptors are negative. All mine are negative, I thought at least 1 had to be positive. What did the cancer progress from then? I don't see Oncologist until the 11th again so any information would be helpful. Thanks

Hi Ms. Tiffany: Triple-negative cancers mean your cancer isn't responsive to estrogen or progesterone, which rules out hormone treatment; and that it doesn't show increased levels of the HER2-new protein, which means you can't take Herceptin, either. Basically, triple-negative cancers are treated with surgery/radiation, or surgery/chemo, with no long-term followup drugs, since none are known to work. However, Avastin is a new drug that's showing some promise with triple-negative cancers; it's just been approved by the FDA, but it's very expensive. I'd ask your doctor about it, OK? Good luck - PJH
