Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Q: Raised area in right breast that hurts with period

Before period I always notice a slightly raised area of my right breast, right near my nipple, in the upper middle of my breast. It is tender and seems fixed to my rib. However if I lie down it seems to disappear somewhere.

I have noticed this on and off for about 6 months. It hasn't grown or gotten any worse. I have no other symptoms. I have seen two different doctors since I noticed the area hurt. One didnt check it and just said I should be fine as it is painful with period. The other I saw two weeks ago and he said my chance of having cancer is tiny, and he made me lie on my back to check the breasts, so of course then the lump disappeared and he said he didn't feel anything.

I am 23 with no history of breast cancer. My mother says it is mastitis but I've never had a baby. What do you think?

Hi - The chances of having breast cancer at your age are tiny. And breast lumps that come and go with your period are usually not something to worry about, as they're probably hormonal. Does the lump ome and go with your period, or is it just the pain that comes and goes? If you can feel the lump throughout your cycle, you should go back to the doctor and ask him/her to examine you while you're sitting, not lying; or in a position where you know you can feel the lump. That way, (s)he can determine if it's something worth investigating further. Good luck - PJH
