Q: can benign turn into cancer

I have a mamagram done annually. In the last past two years, the spot has grown bigger and this year it is even larger so my doctor wants to do a biopsy

Liz, that's good that your doctor is being cautious. Since you haven't yet had a biopsy of this spot (have you?), that means you don't know if it's benign, or not. This will let you know for sure. 85% of biopsies end up coming back benign, so don't panic; take it one step at a time, and stay connected here. Good luck- PJH

Hi Liz!

I'm so sorry to hear that you found a lump, but am glad that you have a dr that is actively pursuing this matter.  Having this biopsy done will tell you if it is benign or malignant (cancerous).  Until you get your results back there's not much way of knowing.

I find myself to be one of thr fortunate one when I found my lump and had a mammo because the lump was the splitting image of that found in those mammo pamplets.  A big white spot with little white lines coming out all around, almost like a sunshine.  In that instance when the radiologist showed it to me my heart sank cause I knew that my gut feeling was right.  They recommended a lumpectomy, and it came back positive for cancer and it did not have clear margins, so I ended up being told I had to get a mastectomy.

At least in your case the lump could go either way.  Hopefully for your sake it is benign, but if it's not you are always welcome here.

Please keep us posted of your results!

Best of luck to you!

Angi
