Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Sunday, May 25, 2008 4 yr. Survivor asks

Q: My scar has become red and sore. I was rubbng it to make it go away. Should I go to the Doctors?

It has been 4 years since my lumpectomy.  I just had a pet scan that says I am cancer free.  So I started to rub my scar to make it go away, and it got sore so I quit then I noticed that it was red and sore so I am worried that it is infected?  Pehaps the fluid built up  since they took my lymph glands out it can't drain?  Can it heal on its own or should I go to the Doctors?

Hi - rubbing your lumpectomy scar won't make it go away - it'll just irritate it, as you've discovered. I'd suggest you leave it completely alone for a day, and see if the redness starts to subside. If it seems to be getting worse, then you'd best get it checked out. Good luck - PJH
