Q: Does anyone know about Lupron treatments?

After a lumpectomy Chemo and radiation I was put on tomoxifen, then Femera because I had a low estrogen count.  Now my estrogen count has gone up to 40 My Doctor wants to put me on Lupron?  I havent heard about this drug and was hoping for some info on it?

Hi - Lupron is generally given to pre-menopausal women to put them into artificial menopause. The goal is to stop your ovaries from making estrogen, as estrogen feeds your cancer. So you can have your ovaries surgically removed; or take Lupron, as an alternative to surgery. It's given by injection. Hope this helps - PJH

Hi!  I am a 7 year breast cancer survivor and am now 40.  I just finished 5 years of Tamoxifen with little side effects.  The problem is I have severe endo and my periods are horrible!  It affects my daily living.  Ive asked my dr aboiut Lupron and have been told just to opt for a hysterectomy intstead.  Im not ready for another surgery and wanted to try Lupron first.  Any thoughts?

Rubyjane, this sounds like the perfect opportunity to seek a second opinion. You and your doctor are both after the same end result (mitigating severe periods), but you want one course of treatment; s/he wants another. Have you asked your doctor why s/he prefers a hysterectomy to Lupron? If you have, and the answer doesn't convince you, then definitely ask for a referral to another doctor for a second opinion, OK? Best of luck to you - PJH

I started Lupron shots in June.  I had breast cancer in 1998 and it returned to my hip and femur.  After they replaced and radiation they put me on Lupron and Femara.  I have not had bad side effects and had a shot today.  I have had bouts of depression but that was due I believe to my cancer returning after 10 years.

It has put me in menapause and I hope its enough to choke out any more cancer that may come along.

Good luck and again...It has not had any side effects for me.

Thanks for your input, Annie; it's so good to hear firsthand from women who've "been there." I hope you continue to do well on the Lupron and that it does the trick. PJH
