Q: I have been on Femara for 6 years. I have developed a rash and constant itching

I am an 80 year old woman who has had a severe rash and itching for a year and a half and my doctor has not been able to identify a couse nor anything that seems to help short of prednisone. My life is greatly affected by this problem and I am thinking about discontinuing the Femara to see if that makes a difference.  I am also on coumidin and blood pressure medications.

Eddy, have you been to a dermatologist? An endocrinologist? In other words, a specialist beyond your GP? It could be that it's one of your other medications causing this; or it could be a nerve problem (which can sometimes produce a rash); it even might be a change in diet, bath gel, laundry detergent... I hope you can rule all of those out before you make a decision on Femara, since it's been shown to prevent recurrence.

If you'd like to take a break from Femara, to see if the itching abates, you might ask your doctor if going back to tamoxifen would provide the same benefit. New data shows that 2 years of Femara followed by 3 years of tamoxifen is just as effective as 5 years of Femara; now, as for year #6 and subsequent years, the data's not in yet... I'm sorry you're having to deal with this. If you've exhausted every avenue (specialists, ruling out other causes), and you're convinced it's the Femara, then only you can make the decision as to how much gain you're getting vs. how much pain (itching). Good luck - I hope you get to the bottom of this. PJH
