Q: my left nipple has brownish discharge is it likely to be cancer

I have a brownish somewhat sticky discharge when I squeez my nipple. is this a sign of cancer and if so what kind. I had a mammorgram and I got the results today there were no lumps found. my doctor has ordered a ultrasound what can this ultrasound tell him. And what other test should I be getting?

Hi - Actually, nipple discharge is quite commmon, and it's rarely a sign of camcer. It can be from a lot of other issues; you'll find this article on nipple discharge quite helpful. I believe the ultrasound will tell the doctor if you have an infected milk duct, or look at other structural abnormalities close to your nipple. Sounds to me like you're dealing with this exactly right; the only other thing you might mention to the doctor is Paget's disease of the nipple, which is an early form of cancer, VERY rare, but sometimes characterized by a bloody discharge.
