Q: bloody breast discharge

Thank you PJ for the information regarding dark nipple discharge. Apparently the surgeon I saw is a breast specialist. I took matters into my own hands today and went to see my gyn who was able to express enough fluid to test in office for blood (positive) and sent more off to the lab. My surgeons attitude was since he was not able to express anything, and ductogram results appear normal, there is nothing he can do right now......

Shoud I find another doctor? This one came highly recommended. He said he can't do anything surgically if he does not see anything coming out of the duct. Should mention I am 42, have not breast fed in almost 8 years....

Unfortunately, I think you should continue to press forward with this. I'd like to say, "Oh, it's probably nothing," but of all the different kinds of breast discharge (which is actually quite common), a bloody discharge is the one you need to be worried about. A breast surgeon might not necessarily be the doctor who knows the most about diseases of the breast; I'm no expert, but you need someone who can tell you what the blood is from, and/or do an examination to ascertain if there's an intraductal papilloma or some other problem under your areola or around your milk ducts. I suggest your read this article on nipple discharge, and go armed with its facts to your gynecologist (who sems sympathetic to your case), and  see what you can cook up between the two of you. Hope things work out well for you - keep pressing forward! - PJH
