Hi - Please don't panic; pain of this kind is only very rarely a breast cancer symptom. I'm also assuming you're relatively young (probably under 40), and the vast majority of breast cancers occur in women far older.

That said, you should be concerned about worsening pain; it could be an infection developing. Since your doctor said to call if the pain worsened – and it did – hopefully you've called your doctor, described your symptoms, and have been given some instructions about how to proceed. If not - best you should do that, OK?

If not an infection, this could be a cyst (or fibroadenoma), as the doctor said; fibrocystic change (the umbrella term for cysts and other non-cancerous breast growths) is quite common in women in their 20s and 30s. It's quite painful; and sometimes cysts need to be drained. But fibrocystic change – if that's the problem – is NOT cancer.

So, please call the doctor ASAP, and get the process moving. No need to be in pain when you could take action to relieve it. Best of luck to you - PJH
