Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Friday, October 31, 2008 sharin asks

Q: freaking out, been sick for a year, finally had B.exam

so sick this last year, terrible bone pain, lost 30 lbs,  feel like I cant turn my neck sometimes, and my chest, and throat, have been burning/aching too, but cant get diagnosed.  been to so many docs. Nothing! sometime the bone pain is so bad I cant sleep, for days at a time. Finally had a breast exm. theykept coming back and getting me for more pics, then after the doc examined the latest pics, sent nurse out to insist, I get  schedualed for another magnified, mamo, and another type of test starts with a P, I will be traveling for the next 3 weeks and leave nov 3- 08 asked could I wait till I come back nov 24, the nurse asked the doc, and the doc said, I dont recommednd it.

the nurse had a weird look on her face, when she said that, then said "considering the amount of unschedualed time the doc spent with you today, in reviewing your mamo results, I dont recommend it either."

Iam so scared, part of me thinks well, that would finally give me an answere, its so hard being sick for so long and not knowing why, but breast cancer!? no one in my family has EVER HAD it. Im trying not to read to much into today, just looking for someone to share with. I also have hepatitis c from improperly sanitized dental utensil, LONG STORY, it took 3 YEARS for me to get THAT diagnosis back in 1994.Im 5 8in by the time I got diagn. I weighed less that 80 lbs. I just dont have it in me to fight something unkown for that long again, you feel very lonely when the doc cant find whats wrong, and your family starts to think its in you head too,

ok Im done ranting now

thanks all

thanks sharin

Sharin, vent away! That's what we're here for. I'm so sorry for all of your illnesses and pain. Had you been having regular mammograms right along? If so, then I doubt this is all from breast cancer, as it would have been identified long before it would have been giving you this kind of pain. In fact, breast cancer is known for being painless - unless it's spread, and I would think you would have noticed a fairly significant lump or other breast abnormality before it would get far enough to produce bone pain. Perhaps the pain is due to some other underlying cause. At any rate, I'm glad you're going to pursue the breast angle. 85% of women who get breast cancer have no family history, so that doesn't protect you... But the vast majority of women with breast cancer beat it and continue on with their lives. So statistically, you're in a good place.

I'd say continue with the exams, and wait and see what the results tell you. 85% of biopsies are  benign, so again, statistically, you're good.

Chronic illness is, indeed, a huge challenge. I like to just put one foot in front of the other, and keep moving forward. Don't look back; no "woulda, shoulda, coulda." Today is what it is. Tomorrow will be another day. Try to stay positive, if you can; and keep moving forward. Best of luck, and please stay in touch here- PJH
