Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Sunday, November 29, 2009 PCC asks

Q: I am worried about early breast cancer/Paget's disease of the nipple.

I have found a small area on my left nipple that has tiny white spots, it seems a little inflammed.  I have no pain, no itchiness or flaking of the skin there and no discharge from the nipple.  I am forty years old.  There is no palpable lump and my BSE is clear, with no changes anywhere else.  I am not able to find any information on this kind of change to the nipple skin, do you know anything about this type of symptom?

Hi - Sounds like you might have some clogged oil glands - there are lots of tiny oil glands in your areola. I'd say give it a week or so, and if it doesn't disappear (or if it gets worse), might as well see a doctor and find out what it is, and if you need to do anything about it. As you mention, you have no apparent symptoms of Paget's/breast cancer, so I wouldn't stress about this; just get it looked at if it doesn't go away on its own. Good luck - PJH
