Sue, although we often advise people that it's OK to watch a lump for as long as a month to get an idea about whether it comes and goes with the menstrual cycle, I would advise you to call the doctor right away.  You use the words "very painful," and the problem is getting worse.  Painful lumps are often an abscess, which is a problem that needs quick attention.  Most breast lumps are not cancer, but if this is cancer, the fact that you can see it growing within two weeks means that there is not time to waste.  I hope the doctor will have a reassuring diagnosis for you.
