Hi Lauri - Everyone's cancer is different, so it's impossible to give exact statistics. Recurrence risk will be based on what further treatment you have beyond a lumpectomy, among other factors. Read my piece, "Am I cured?", for more information about this. As for discomfort, again, that's relative, and depends on how much tissue they remove during the lumpectomy, your personal pain threshold, etc. Be sure to let your doctor and the nurses know what you're feeling - they should be able to help you a lot with the pain.
