Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Q: mammogram

I have just had my first mammogram.  My results were the breast tissue contains scattered regions of fibroglandular tissue, which may obscure a lesion. There is a nodular density in the 6:00 position left breast requiring spot compression views and possibly an ultrasound. Assymmetrical appearance of the left axillary lymph nodes.  Should i be worried?

Marie, I never advise worrying - it's a waste of time. All it does is make you feel bad. Action is key, and you've already taken that by having your first mammogram. Your results don't sound much different than many women having their first mammogram, particularly those with smaller breasts. Many, MANY women get callbacks on their mammograms; and some even have biopsies, but even if it gets to that point, about 85% of biopsies are negative. So, as they used to say "back in the day," don't borrow trouble. Continue on with your tests, and if by some small, unlucky chance you finally get to the point where you hear those words "you have cancer" - then you'll deal with it. Millions of us have, and we're still around to tell the tale. Take care, and good luck with those tests - PJH
