Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Saturday, October 11, 2008 cathy asks

Q: My mammo report cam back saying I had nipple retraction and areola nodule.

I have to go back for more detailed testing. Should I bring a friend? The nurse said I would not leave without someone talking to me about my condition. It sounds like they know something already.

Thanks,

Cathy

Cathy, any time you have nipple retraction they need to look at it further. Could be a cyst, could be a fibroadenoma, could be fibroids in general; a benign tumor; or a cancerous tumor. they just won't know till they do some more tests. Plase understand that the vast majority of breast lumps are NOT cancer; and of those that are biopsied, 85% are NOT cancer. So the statistics are with you. I'd be diligent about followup, but not scared/panicked, OK? One step at a time. Good luck - PJH
