Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Saturday, October 02, 2010 aayu1224 asks

Q: I've had an on-going issue with my left breast. It began 4 years ago with a large abscess, that abscess was drained.

2 months ago it came back, only this time it was hard and painful. The ER rushed me into surgery because they didn't see much fluid just a large mass. The did a biopsy to rule out cancer. They took out 2cc's of puss. It came back negative for cancer. 3 weeks ago, the pain and mass came back. The doctors said it might be my body rejecting the scar tissue causing infection, or there may be infected milk ducts. So again I went in for surgery to have scar tissue and ducts removed. I've been in extreme pain since. My breast is now very hard, hot, and painful. I had a followup appointment yesterday. The night before, I was showering and washing the area and I felt something rupture inside. I went to my appointment and let the doctor know what happened, the pain, and that I felt like there may be another infection, and that I had no feeling in my nipple. I was brushed off. She said that everything was fine. She told me if I "thought" something ruptured its a good thing. But I remember from other instances where doctors have told me that if an abscess ruptures inside the body, it can be lethal. She wasn't interested in my concerns. Today as I was sitting on the couch, I was checking to see if there was any change in appearance, as I lifted my breast puss began come out of the nipple. What do I do?

It sounds like you have a stubborn infection. Go to the emergency room of your hospital; they have to see you and treat you. If it seems like they're not taking your concerns seriously, find another hospital. Once this seems somewhat under control, get yourself a referral to a breast specialist, to find out what's causing these flareups. I'm glad they've tested for and ruled out cancer, but you can't just let infections go unchecked; you may need an intravenous antibiotic, which is what it takes for some women to rid thesmelves of what can be very tough-to-treat breast infections. Best of luck - PJH
